A Defence Against Everyone Who Says You Can’t

Almost four years ago to the day I listed out a few goals on a (now-defunct) blog:

  1. I have ulcerative colitis. I want to not have it any more.
  2. I want to make money for myself.
  3. I want to feel alive every day.

I’m happy to say I’ve pretty much nailed all three now. Four years later, here I am, making money for myself and feeling alive. I even managed to heal my colitis without medication.

But somebody commented on this saying:

‘Karen, you will never have number 3 as long as number 2 is on your list. If you want to make money for yourself it should be your top priority and your only priority. Something tells me that isn’t the case, so fuck number 2. Focus on number 3.’

I mean, first of all, the logic from this guy is ridiculous: how the fuck was I ever supposed to feel alive every day if I didn’t learn to make money for myself, you know? If I was still working in a shitty job? Or even a good job, but one that still came with its restraints and rules and regulations? As far as I’m concerned, the only way to feel alive is to live your life 100% the way you want to – to be in control of your own, er… life. (Gross, almost said ‘destiny’.)

What the fuck did that guy know about my priorities? Or what I could achieve?

Screw the naysayers. Do what you have to do. What you want to do. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you you can’t. That you’ll fail. That what you want is impossible or ‘unrealistic’.

Prove to all those fuckers that you CAN.
