This may go without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway because that’s just how I roll. And actually, it’s kind of the point. I can say this and you will read it, because you like reading what I have to say.
So, what the fuck am I on about, you ask? I’m talking about the ability to write engagingly. In a way that makes people want to read every word.
If you’ve decided to start a blog, there’s a big old checklist of things you need to do. Things like:
- Update regularly and be consistent.
- Write grammatically correctly. (Wait… is that right?)
- Except until you know enough to break the rules. Then fuck grammar. Do what you want.
- Write informative, useful stuff.
- Learn how to write good headlines.
And so on and so on. I’m sure you have a pretty good idea of how to ‘write a good blog post’ by now.
But that’s not all there is to it, is it? Because if you want to be really successful, you not only need to do all that stuff. You also need to learn to write with personality.
This is not a college essay. This is not a cover letter to get a job. This is not a handwritten note to your grandmother.
This is you. Your blog needs to be you. People must want to hear what you have to say. Because if they don’t, they will only read your blog when you have some specific information they want. They’ll find you on Google because they happen to be searching for ‘how to write a tagline’ or something. And then they’ll never come back.
But that’s what you want, isn’t it? For people to come back, I mean. To talk to you. To engage with you. To learn to trust you. Because that’s what needs to happen if you’re going to be successful.
I’m about to sound incredibly arrogant, but bear with me: I feel confident that I could start a blog on any subject (that interested me, at least), and people would read it. And they’d come back and read it again. And they’d subscribe. Because they just like the way I write. I’m not saying the audience from this blog (hey, that’s you!) would necessarily be interested in any new blog I started on another topic. But you might be. You might be interested not only in the things I have to say, but also in me.
The fact that I can write well and write with personality and write in a way that makes people want to talk to me – that is why I’m confident I could start a successful blog about anything. Because I know how to write with personality. With MY personality. Obviously it helps that my personality is awesome. But it’s not just about that. It’s also about being honest and upfront. Saying what needs to be said. Saying what I believe to be true. Sharing my opinions.
I met a guy on the train the other day and we got chatting for a while. (Sup Andy!) He was interested when I told him I was a writer, so I showed him my website. ‘Hey, you write like you talk!’ he said. Exactly. That’s what I do. I write with personality. My own. And that’s what you should do too.
I’m going to write more next week on exactly how to do that. But I’ll let you in on a little secret right now: it’s not just about writing conversationally. It’s about putting your innermost down on the page. STAY TUNED.
